Sporting’s Gyokeres heading to Arsenal

Arsenal are on the brink of completing a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, with negotiations now in the final stages.

As reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, an agreement between the clubs worth €63.5 million (£54.8m) plus €10m in potential add-ons is close to being finalised. Talks over the structure of the bonus payments had delayed the move, but sources now indicate only minor details remain before it can be completed.

Gyokeres has made it clear throughout the window that his sole focus was on joining Arsenal, despite late interest from other clubs. The 27-year-old Sweden international’s agent even waived his commission to help facilitate the move. A contract running until June 2030 has been prepared.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas confirmed last week that Gyokeres would be fined and asked to apologise to team-mates after missing the return for pre-season training amid the ongoing transfer saga.

After scoring 54 goals in 52 appearances last season, Gyokeres has become one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers. He was identified early as Arsenal’s top centre-forward target following a campaign in which they finished ten points behind champions Liverpool and struggled without a fit No 9 for much of the season.

Gyokeres previously played in England for Brighton and Coventry City, before moving to Sporting for £17m in 2023. He has registered 97 goals and 28 assists for the Portuguese side, helping them win back-to-back league titles and the Taca de Portugal.

Arsenal’s summer business is being led by new sporting director Andrea Berta. Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke have all joined, while Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera is set to finalise his move shortly.

Gyokeres has 15 goals in 26 games for Sweden since debuting at age 20.
