Newcastle seal £50m deal for Elanga

Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign Sweden international Anthony Elanga. The deal is worth an initial £52 million, with additional performance-related bonuses considered difficult to trigger.

According to The Athletic, Elanga is expected to undergo a medical within the next 48 hours and join up with his new teammates before the end of the week.

The 23-year-old forward becomes a key addition as Newcastle continue to strengthen ahead of the new season. Personal terms have already been agreed on a five-year contract.

Newcastle had previously submitted a lower £45 million bid in June, but Forest rejected the offer. Talks resumed, leading to the improved proposal. Manchester United, Elanga’s former club, are due a significant sell-on fee as part of the transfer.

Elanga played in all 38 Premier League matches for Forest last season, contributing six goals and 11 assists as the club finished seventh to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. He has 22 senior international caps for Sweden since making his debut in 2022.

Elanga joined Forest from Manchester United in July 2023 and made 83 appearances in total for the club. Newcastle’s pursuit of the winger was first reported by The Athletic in early July.
